Statesboro mayor orders flags lowered in honor of Amos Hill
STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Flags at the City of Statesboro buildings are lowered to half staff in honor of Amos Hill.
Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar ordered that flags be lowered for the lifelong Statesboro/Bulloch County native, who passed away on Monday at the age of 92.
“Mr. Hill lived a life that reflected the very best of our community,” McCollar said. “His faith was evident, his love for his family was unwavering, and his commitment to serving others left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.”
McCollar said the city is grateful for Hill’s legacy.
“As we lower the flags to half staff in his honor, we are reminded that Statesboro has truly lost a jewel,” McCollar said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hill family, and we are grateful for the legacy of faith, love, and service that he leaves behind.”
Hill is described as an avid sports fan and played catcher for the Ruff Rider Baseball Team. He was also the honorary basketball coach, “Coach Hill #2,” for Coach Lee Hill and the Statesboro High School Blue Devils Basketball Team.
He was known to many as “Famous Amos” or “Fame,” according to an obituary written in his honor.
Hill said he began working at 16 and started working as a school bus driver for the Bulloch County Board of Education. He was also employed as a custodian for the Bulloch County Board of Education at Statesboro High School, before transferring to Sallie Zetterower School. Hill retired after forty-seven years of service.
