Man stranded on Tybee during Helene now missing

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - You may remember a man that went by the name Huck Finn who got washed ashore alongside his dog just off Highway 80 by Hurricane Helene in 2024. His real name is Scotty Scarberry, and he’s been missing now for days according to family and friends.

He was last reportedly seen on Sunday, July 13. WTOC spoke with Scarberry’s family who said he left Tybee in the spring, headed north to Kentucky to live on his uncle’s land.
Roland Scarberry, “Finn’s” uncle, said they haven’t seen or heard from him in days, and the last they heard was that he was headed out to explore abandoned mines in the Virginia area. What really concerns him is that Creedy, Finn’s dog, was left at home. This is something Ronald Scarberry said he wouldn’t do if he was planning to be gone for days.
“He said he was going in the mines, and I honestly believe that if that’s where he said he was going, that’s where he was going,” said Roland.
WTOC contacted the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, who said they requested the Virginia Department of Energy Mines Rescue Team, which dug out the mine’s entrance, but there was no sign of him.
Scarberry’s family asked that if anyone has heard from him or knows where he may be, to please call the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office at 276-935-2313
