Savannah’s historic powder magazine vandalized, concerned resident speaks out
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Hiding behind the trees and no trespassing signs along Highway 70 sits a piece of Savannah’s history.
Once home for explosives and gunpowder, now, overgrown with weeds and a fresh coat of graffiti.
“This is the worst I have ever seen,” said Tommy Holland.
Tommy Holland says he has had a heart for this building’s preservation for more than 30 years.
He says watching it continue to be vandalized has only fueled his fire to continue.
“We just need to stop the decline of the building itself,” said Holland.
According to the city of Savannah, they have done several rounds of graffiti cleanup.
The city is also drafting a plan of action to clean up the inside.
City leaders say the removal has to be done a certain way due to the building’s historic nature.
On Monday, the graffiti was still there.
But there is a new lock on the building’s gate.
And no trespassing signs peppered around the grounds show evidence the city has made changes.
But by the look of it, the city isn’t the only ones who have been here recently.
The city also says designating the property as a historic land mark was the first step to further protect it.
But people like Holland says more needs to be done, and quicker.
“I would like the property to be cleared so we can at least see if from Highway 17,” said Holland.
