Savannah leader under fire after social media comments on Charlie Kirk

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC is looking into a social media post made by a Savannah leader about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The post is now raising concerns about if their job could be on the line.

In a social media video shared by Savannah Alderwoman Alicia Miller Blakely a man called conservative activist Charlie Kirk ‘a racist’.

In Blakely’s shared post, she says quote “Tell it! We know who that poor excuse of a human being was.”

Many community members on social media are now calling for her to be removed from her role on the council.

“No, no, no,” said Mayor Van Johnson, City of Savannah.

This was Savannah Mayor Van Johnson’s response after he was asked if an elected leader here could lose their job because of comments, they made online.

“The only efforts and remedy... we have an ethics ordinance that is reviewed by an ethics board,” said Johnson. “Certainly, there are opportunities for recall, but no. I mean, I get asked to resign every day over the last 22 years, I’m still here. People have a right to their opinion whether we agree or not.”

He says while he didn’t agree with many of Kirk’s comments, he does not condone political violence.

“Things that I felt sometimes were racist, inappropriate or sexist and so those were my feelings, but I also acknowledge he had the right to his opinion,” said Johnson. “To the other end of it, he should not have been killed. Political violence has no place in our society.”

Johnson says big picture he wants people to find ways to unite.

“I’ve heard of employers firing and suspending people for saying the things that they want to say,” said Johnson. " I just think that we have to turn the temperature down.”

WTOC reached out to Blakely for comment, we have not heard back.
