Savannah church plans to give away 1,000 school uniforms for free

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A church in Savannah is giving away 1,000 school uniforms to those in need Sunday.

WTOC spoke with members of Kingdom Life Christian Fellowship to see how the event will help students and their families this school year.

Pastor Charles Roberson and his wife Yolanda started the event three years ago. They wanted to help families who cannot afford all the supplies and uniforms their kids need at the beginning of a school year.

Tiffany Young and Ramona Minter organized this year’s giveaway, and the special events co-chairs said they started preparing back in May.

Church members donated to help purchase the uniforms and school supplies. They have everything from backpacks and folders to notebooks and pencils to giveaway.

Young said she’s glad her church is able to provide these items in a time of need for many families in the community.

“There’s a lot of burdens that everyone’s feeling, you know, with where we are right now. A lot of stressors on parents and families, and so, I think we’re really just trying to alleviate some of that pressure and do a very small part, whatever we can do, to help families get through this beginning of the school year time,” said Young.

Kingdom Life’s 1,000 Uniform Giveaway is one of several back-to-school events happening in the community this weekend. Minter said the church is happy to help in any way they can.

“We just appreciate the fact that we are able to do it, and yes there are other organizations that are giving back as well,” said Minter. “And it just shows how much Savannah as a city comes together to help those in need.”

School uniforms and supplies will be passed out on a first come, first serve basis.

There’s also a one uniform per student limit, and students must be present with their parents or families to receive items during the event.

The giveaway starts Sunday at 3 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. inside the Life Center at the church. Organizers say they’ll try to keep the line moving so people don’t have to stand outside too long. They’ll also have water bottles and Gatorade to help people stay hydrated.
