Savannah Police discuss safety measures ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - With New Year’s Eve festivities set for Wednesday evening, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) is urging residents and visitors to stay safe while enjoying the celebration.

SPD community engagement officer Rebekah Helmick told WTOC she has worked 10 New Year’s Eves with the department and highlighted several recurring safety concerns — most notably, celebratory gunfire.

“Sometimes there is celebratory fire, armed fire shooting going off,” Helmick said. “I’ve never written any citations as far as that goes, but that could happen.”

Helmick said officers will be watching for dangerous behavior and enforcing the law when necessary. She emphasized that the department’s goal is for everyone to enjoy the night safely.

Fireworks, crowds and logistics

The Savannah Riverfront is planning a major fireworks show that drew roughly 35,000 people last year. Julie Musselman, executive director of Savannah’s Riverfront, told WTOC that pyrotechnic crews are already preparing the display.

“We’re so excited to welcome everyone in our region to come down to Savannah’s waterfront and bring in the new year,” Musselman said.

The fireworks barge will be positioned in the Savannah River in front of the Savannah Convention Center. Musselman said spectators should start to see the barge arriving around 11:15–11:30 p.m.

The midnight countdown will be followed by a roughly 10-minute fireworks show.

Where to watch

The show will be visible along River Street — from Plant Riverside to Eastern Wharf Park (next to the Marriott). With numerous restaurants and bars open downtown, the area is expected to be busy.

Safety tips from SPD and event organizers

  • Do not discharge firearms: SPD warns that celebratory gunfire is dangerous and can lead to citations or arrests. If you see or hear gunfire, move to a safe area and notify police.
  • Plan a safe way home: If you plan to drink, arrange a sober driver, rideshare, taxi or a designated driver ahead of time.
  • Be mindful of crowds: Expect heavy foot traffic downtown; keep personal belongings secure and stay with your group.
  • Protect pets: Fireworks and loud noises can distress animals — keep pets indoors and in a safe, quiet space.
  • Handle fireworks carefully: If you use personal fireworks before or after the official show, follow local laws and safety guidelines.

Helmick reiterated that the goal is for everyone to have a fun, safe New Year’s Eve. “You should also be just watching the area to make sure everybody’s continued to have fun,” she said.

WTOC will have coverage from Plant Riverside as the celebration kicks off.

For those attending, be aware of increased police presence and follow any instructions from officers or event staff.
