Savannah Police Dept. hosts Back to School Bash
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah police officers passed out bookbags and school supplies Saturday at the Savannah Police Department’s annual Back to School Bash.
SPD and their outreach organization, the Savannah Impact Program, hosted the event.
Local businesses and organizations had tents set up and were passing out resources to families.
There were games, loud music and food fresh from the grill for everyone to enjoy.
Most importantly, kids were able to go home with brand-new bookbags and supplies for the school year.
LaToyia Daniels, program coordinator of the Savannah Impact Program, says these resources will set students up for success in the classroom and keep them coming back to school.
“Keeping the kids equipped with what they need, that’s going to keep them in the classroom. That’s going to keep them productive. Some kids just don’t go to school because they just don’t have it, so we want to be able to provide these resources,” said Daniels.
Daniels said she wants to hold a similar Back to School event sometime after Christmas, so kids can go back to school with a replenished set of supplies.
Savannah District 2 Alderman Detric Leggett stopped by the Back to School Bash. He said the event is a great example of how police officers and volunteers are showing kids they care.
“We want to make sure these young people know that they are safe, that they have opportunities to grow and be great. And the best way to be great is to support them as they go to school,” said Alderman Leggett.
Organizers say they gave away around 300 bookbags.
Nearly 30 community partners donated resources for Saturday’s event, including the Savannah Downtown Business Association, Girl Scouts and Old Savannah City Mission.
