BLUFFTON, S.C. (WTOC) - More than 1,000 residents lined both sides of Bluffton Parkway for a “No Kings” rally, according to counters at the event.

The crowd was made up of protesters of all ages, including a 102-year-old woman. Her sign read, “I’m 102 years old and wanted to stay at home today but trump makes me too angry.”

Protesters held signs expressing discontent with President Donald Trump and his administration. They also called out specific issues such as immigration and the war in Iran.

Marshall Minchui said he has never seen issues more important than what the country is facing today in his 88 years.

“This may be our last opportunity to do things that are worthwhile to our children and grandchildren,” Minchui said.

State Rep. Jermaine Johnson was there alongside protesters to show his concern.

“It’s time to stand up and save our democracy,” Johnson said. “People are just unsure about the future of their families and I wanted to show the support of people of South Carolina and let them know I am standing with them to make sure we can lead this state into a better direction.”

Protesters cite immigration, democracy concerns

Barbra Minchui said seeing the treatment of immigrants was one of the main issues that drove her to the rally.

“I love them all, they make our country work, and they’re human beings, and all the people means all the people,” Barbra Minchui said.

Protesters waved American flags and held signs expressing their love of democracy. Samuel Ruggeoe said he was heartwarmed by the shared passion at the rally.

“It’s heartwarming to see all the expressions, imagination people have,” Ruggeoe said. ”And the fierce feeling about trying to save our democracy, and you know the better way of life."

Many people noted that the rally was the largest “No Kings” turnout they had ever seen in Bluffton.

Steve Legg, who dressed up as a rubber chicken, said seeing the community united is meaningful.

“I mean look at all these people out here, it’s a gorgeous day, and the energy alone, you can just feel that everyone is just all about the positivity and just bringing the community together,” Legg said.

The White House responded to the “No Kings” protests across the country. Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson released a statement saying, “The only people who care about these Trump derangement therapy sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them.”
