SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff wrapped up a campaign stop in Savannah Friday as he runs in one of the key races that will determine which party controls Congress.

In his address to supporters, Ossoff emphasized his intentions to unite America, speaking directly about the current state of the country and the work he’s been doing to improve the lives of Georgians.

A major focus of Ossoff’s remarks centered on his infrastructure efforts. He highlighted the bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021, which aims to provide Georgia with $9 billion over the course of five years, according to the U.S. Department of Transit.

Ossoff also addressed the current political climate in the United States, referring to the Trump administration as “hostile and depraved.” He emphasized that this upcoming election is essential to the nation’s future.

“The nation is once again, gonna turn its eyes to the state of Georgia. This is the most crucial US Senate race in the country,” said Ossoff, D-GA.

The senator turned his attention to the issue of maternal mortality in Georgia, a critical health concern in the state. Ossoff highlighted that Georgia historically has had the worst rates of pregnancy deaths in the country. He noted that half of Georgia’s counties lack obstetricians/gynecologists (OBGYNs), pledging to fight for change on this issue.

“To make sure that every single county has an OBGYN to stop women preventably dying in childbirth in the wealthiest country in the world,” Ossoff said.

Ossoff criticized the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in communities, taking issue with the agency’s use of force and the Trump administration’s response to fatal incidents involving American citizens.

“Masked federal agents detaining people based on their skin color or their accent, and brutalizing and even killing American citizens,” Ossoff said.

Despite his criticism of President Trump, Ossoff said he believes the country can move past its current divisions.

“I believe, as ugly as it is, as depraved as it is, I still believe we can reunite this country,” Ossoff said.

Three Republicans are currently leading the field to challenge Ossoff in the general election. The GOP primary election is scheduled for May 19th to determine the Republican nominee.
