One person dead after overnight crash on U.S. 278 in the Lowcountry

HILTON HEAD, Sc. (WTOC) - [Update as of 7/23/2025]: Wednesday, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the name of the deceased as 21-year-old Carlos Vera of Hilton Head.

According to the coroner’s office, Vera died on the scene from blunt force injuries sustained in a single car motor vehicle collision on Museum Street.

SC Highway Patrol said they are the investigating agency.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported one person died after crashing into a tree on U.S. Highway 278 Monday morning.

They said it happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday, July 21, near Museum Street.

They reported the driver was in a 2006 Toyota Sudan heading west on U.S. Highway 278 but then drove off the road and hit a tree. They died at the scene.

Their name has not been released at this time.
