One-on-one with Savannah State University’s new president
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As we count down to the new school year, WTOC’s Dawn Baker talked one-on-one with the new president of Savannah State University, Dr. Jermaine Whirl.
The 15th president of SSU said he has been very busy during his first 100 days. He said he has been meeting with students, graduates and the community. Dr. Whirl said he is pleased by the excitement around the community and inspired by what he hears about the legacy and how SSU has transformed lives for generations.
He’s also happy that students want to give back to the community.
Dr. Whirl and campus leaders are expecting about 3,300 students for the Fall semester. His goal is to have 6,000 students by the year 2030. He knows that means SSU needs to build more housing at 94% occupancy now.
Dr. Whirl’s long-term vision is to pursue a Carnegie R-3 designation. Whirl says they want to be a doctoral degree granting institution with high levels of research.
