New SC law limits school, college bathrooms to sex assigned at birth

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Governor Henry McMaster has signed House Bill 4756 into law, which will enact tougher restrictions on what bathrooms students can use at public schools and colleges.

The Carolina Student Physical Privacy Act takes steps that aim to promote and solidify rules that make it so that students can only use the bathroom and locker room facilities that correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth.

If school districts or colleges are found not to be in compliance with the new law, they could lose up to 25% of their funding until they are.

Jace Woodrum, the first transgender director for the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, released a statement on Monday, saying that “these callous acts by our state lawmakers do not reflect the values and priorities of South Carolinians who believe that all students, including transgender students, should have a fair chance to succeed.”
