Netflix’s ‘Sweet Magnolias’ films final episode in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The popular Netflix show “Sweet Magnolias” will have its final episode filmed in Savannah starting Tuesday.

“We from the get go. We were like they’re going to Savannah. Nothing perks up the soul like a little time out of town with your best friends,” said creator of the show, Sheryl Anderson.

Sweet Magnolias has been preparing for its 5th season.

The creator of the show, Sheryl Anderson, told us that this isn’t their first time here, and that they even scouted the area out in August.

She says it lived up to the hype.

The show’s main location is the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina.

However, they are calling Savannah by its name, and leaning into the city’s reputation.

“When we were looking for a place for a place for the ladies to go, we thought—Savannah! It’s gorgeous, it’s picturesque. We from the get-go, we were like ‘they’re going to Savannah,’" said Anderson.

Anderson says she thinks the show mixes perfectly with Savannah, and that the cast and location blend together exactly how she anticipated.

What’s happening with the film industry in Savannah?

Recent studies show that Savannah is making significantly less money from film productions in recent years.

WTOC spoke with Film Savannah’s executive director to find out why.

“Once a production head’s decided that they want to look at we’re the first phone call,” said Walker Dalton, Executive Director of Film Savannah.

Dalton explained about worker strikes in 2023 causing a film lull not just in Savannah, or even Georgia, but the country as a whole.

“You know, you have had strikes, you had re-negotiation a lot of that was very unsustainable for a long-term so then you have essentially a little bit of a crash that’s happening, it’s called a lull, not just in our region or the state but across the country,” said Dalton.

Dalton estimates the industry here will return back to normal, but that will take time.

But if there’s one thing Savannah can do, it’s charm film creators like Sheryl Anderson.

Soon enough, we’ll see Savannah representing on the small screen once again, but until then, to quote a famous Savannah production- it’s kind of like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.
