SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - 21-year-old Aujawan Hymon was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for bringing a machine gun to the Oglethorpe Mall.

It will be followed by three years of supervised release, and he was fined $1,200 after pleading guilty to Illegal Possession of a Machine Gun.

Three people were wounded during the exchange of gunfire, including Hymon, who was seen by witnesses and on surveillance cameras carrying a pistol.

Six men are facing serious charges in connection with the shooting that left Tina Smith dead.

“Getting guns out of the hands of felons, and keeping illegal machine guns off the streets, is fundamental to making our community safer,” said U.S. Attorney Margaret E. “Meg” Heap. “We applaud the work of our law enforcement partners for their vigilance in investigating these cases.”

The footage showed Hymon threw a gun, a .40-caliber Glock Model 22 that was modified with a “Glock switch’ to convert into a machine gun, in a mall trash. Investigators recovered it at the scene.

Hymon, who was on state probation, did not appear to have fired the pistol.
