Local democrats hold rally expressing disappointment in the recently passed law

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Coastal Georgia for Democracy held a rally in Savannah Saturday to proclaim their disappointment in the recent passing of the Big Beautiful Bill that was signed into law July 4th. The supporters held signs, shouted chants, and marched around Bullstreet as a part of their first amendment right.

Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill passed through Congress and was signed into law earlier this month, on American’s Independence Day. A bill that objectors here in Savannah say feels anything but free.

Speakers from Democratic organizations of surrounding counties came to Thomas Square to voice their distaste for the bill and other republican leaders, such as Buddy Carter.

We reached out to Congressman Buddy Carter’s office ahead of the rally scheduled earlier this month and they offered us this statement in regards to the Big Beautiful Bill.

“The One Big, Beautiful Bill eliminates waste, fraud, and abuse, ensuring American citizens – not illegal immigrants – benefit from taxpayer-funded programs. We are saving, sustaining, and securing key programs such as SNAP and Medicaid so they are available for those who need them most. The One Big, Beautiful Bill invests in our nation’s future, puts more money in hardworking Americans’ pockets, and will usher in economic growth and prosperity by preventing the largest tax hike in history, which would have cost the average Georgia family an additional $1,500 – or seven weeks’ worth of groceries – a year."

In addition to the criticism of Carter, speakers gave the crowd a call to action saying that this next election cycle they must demand better Democrats to vote for.

Rally participants braved the heat and said that it’s a small cost to show support to what they say is an important cause.

“The GOP has passed what Trump and Buddy Carter call the “One Big Beautiful Bill” — but it’s anything but beautiful for everyday Georgians. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities released numbers that illustrate how the drastic cuts, mainly taking effect AFTER the 2026 election midterms, will take health coverage away from millions of people and raise families’ cost of living,” said a Coastal Georgia for Democracy spokesperson. “These includeripping away affordable health insurance from750,000 Georgians,  jeopardizing the Medicare coverage of1.9 million Georgia seniors, and drastic cuts tokid’s nutrition programs, rural hospitals, and essential health services. The bill is the largest transfer of wealth in American history, all to pay for $4.5 trillion in tax breaks going to the ultra-wealthy and corporations.”
