Live Oak Public Library launching summer reading program with goal of 3 million minutes

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Live Oak Public Libraries is inviting readers of all ages to participate in its 2026 Summer Reading Program beginning June 1.

This year’s program, themed “Unearth a Story,” runs through July 31 and challenges the community to read a combined three million minutes in 60 days.

Library leaders say the free annual program is designed to encourage lifelong reading while helping students avoid the “summer slide” during school break.

Participants can track their reading progress online or at their local library branch. Online registration is already underway.

Live Oak will also host kickoff parties from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 6, at several library branches, including Bull Street, Forest City, Garden City, Hinesville, Islands and Southwest Chatham.

“This year’s theme, ‘Unearth a Story,’ gave us the opportunity to create exciting programming, reading recommendations and activities for patrons of all ages,” said Executive Director Lola DeWitt.

Officials say last year’s program drew more than 8,100 participants and nearly 1,000 programs across local branches.

In partnership with America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, free healthy lunches will also be offered weekdays from noon to 1 p.m. for children ages 0 to 18 at seven library branches from June 1 through July 31.

Those locations include:

  • Bull Street
  • Forest City
  • Garden City
  • Hinesville
  • Midway-Riceboro
  • Port City
  • Southwest Chatham

Library officials say kickoff events will include family activities, welcome bags, reading logs and program guides.
