by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Time is running out for people to visit the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle during its stop in Savannah.

The 295-foot sailing vessel is docked on River Street near the World War II Monument and will remain open for free public tours through Sunday evening.

Tour hours for Sunday are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. No tickets are required.

Savannah is the Eagle’s first stop during its 106-day voyage along the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf of America.

The Eagle is a three-masted sailing barque with more than 22,000 square feet of sail and six miles of rigging. It is homeported at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and is the only active square-rigger in United States government service.

Since 1946, the vessel has served as a training ship for Coast Guard Academy cadets and officer candidates, teaching seamanship, navigation, and leadership skills.

The last time the Eagle visited Savannah was in 2019.
