TOOMBS COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Roberto Itzep-Caba, who’s 18, was on his way to Toombs County High School after dropping his mother off at work last week.

That’s when a Lyons Police officer pulled him over for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Police arrested him for driving unlicensed and took him to the Toombs County Jail.

The Toombs County Sheriff has confirmed with WTOC that Caba has no previous criminal record.

The sheriff also tells us that when Caba’s fingerprints were taken at the jail, the system immediately sent the prints to federal agencies including immigration.

The sheriff says that Caba’s prints were flagged because he has had an administrative immigration warrant for around nine years.

We spoke to Roberto’s father and a translator on Tuesday and they asked us not show their faces on camera for their own safety.

“All he wanted was to continue studying and being a good student,” said Roberto’s Family.

Caba’s parents say they moved him to the United States nine years ago under asylum from Guatemala.

“So they have been here for about nine years. Roberto was 9-years-old when he got here,” said Roberto’s family.

WTOC spoke with Caba’s girlfriend of three years, Maritza Zamorano.

She tells us that she and the family communicated with Caba through the jail phones, but they were soon alerted that he had been transferred.

“So, he called from the jail phone on Sunday and he explained that he will know more information on Monday at around 11. But instead on Monday, around eight in the morning, immigration took him to another facility,” said Zamorano.

The family tells us that Roberto was transferred to Stewart Immigration Detention Center.

Zamorano, the Caba family, and other Toombs County locals are spreading the word about Roberto through social media.

Zamorano says they have started a GoFundMe and are planning different drives to help pay for a lawyer.

“We’re fighting for him and we love him....and we all miss him,” said Zamorano.
