King suspends US Senate challenge against Ossoff, will seek re-election as insurance commissioner

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A candidate — and the current fire safety and insurance commissioner — has suspended his challenge to unseat U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff.

John King announced in a social media post on Thursday that he would be suspending his Republican bid for the U.S. Senate to oust Ossoff, a Democrat.

“I got into the U.S. Senate race to beat Jon Ossoff, not distract from the mission. Right now, it’s clear there’s little path forward to the nomination, so today I’m suspending my campaign,” King said.

King said he would be running for election for the state’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. The first Hispanic elected to a statewide office in Georgia, King was sworn in by Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019 and elected to his first full four-year term in 2022.

“I’m going to do everything I can to keep Georgia’s state offices red and back a Senate nominee who supports President Trump’s agenda,” King said.

King was among several Republican contenders — both officially running and rumored — for Ossoff’s seat.

Currently, Ossoff is the only Democrat running in the race.
