How to keep yourself hydrated and healthy amidst stretch of summer heat

by Cam McCann

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The temperatures out across the Savannah area are scorching with forecasts reaching a “feels like” temp around 110. Most studies show that the human body starts to max out its body-temperature regulation at 112 degrees.

So what’re some things you can do to still be able to go out and enjoy the weather?

Making sure to hydrate is tantamount, but water isn’t the only thing you need to be bringing with you if you were to make your way out to Tybee Island’s beach.

“I recommend a hat, shades, bring a cooler full of drinks and cold snacks,” said Tybee Beach Lifeguard Jackson Briscoe. “Watermelon is great, cantaloupe or really any water-filled fruit.”

Proper nutrition is a great way to keep your body operating at a high level to ward off heat stroke, but the sun and heat are unrelenting no matter how hydrated you are.

“Umbrellas are going to be one of your first lines of defense on days like today,” said WTOC Meteorologist Andrew Gorton. “Of course sunscreen as well, you don’t want to just replace one with the other but if you could have both, it’s going to make you even safer, especially when the UV Index is in that high category.”

Using an infrared thermometer, the temperature of surfaces like sand at the beach or wood on the pier at Tybee Beach were both above 125. Parked car windows recorded at 134 and the pavement on streets in the sun ranged from 130-145.

Don’t go canceling that midweek trip to the beach just yet though, as temperatures should lower as we trek into the week, but take precautions and continue to listen in to our meteorologists’ on how best to prepare for each day’s forecast.
