Hinesville residents react to Fort Stewart shooting

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC) - Law enforcement says the suspect was arrested just 40 minutes after shots were fired, but the community is still feeling the impacts of the Fort Stewart shooting a day later.

Not only are we seeing the soldiers being impacted by this shooting, but the community of Hinesville as well.

After speaking to several people across the community, they say they are still a little bit in shock that this happened.

For most of these locals, they say this hits too close to home as their loved ones and friends are either stationed or work at the Fort Stewart post.

Residents say that they are shocked by this tragedy because living in a community surrounding a big military post like Fort Stewart, it always felt safer to them. Others are calling for action.

They say that this tragedy points out the need for more mental health services and aid in this military community.

WTOC stopped by a popular local barber shop and the owner, Rickie McGregroy, says he just can’t believe it.

McGregroy used to cut the alleged shooter, Sgt. Quornelius Radford’s hair.

He shares that Radford was just like all the other soldiers who regularly come into his shop.

“Never once did we notice something out of the ordinary with him, not something the average person would be looking for anyways. Who knows what could make a person snap,” said McGregory.

Now Rickie and other Hinesville community natives say that the community as a whole is just thankful that these five injured soldiers are now safe and recovering.
