Hampton County Regional Medical Center facing issues due to cyber incident
HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The regional medical center in Hampton County is trying to fix security issues after being hit by a cyber attack.
Viewers tell WTOC the medical center has not been able to access people’s medical records for over a week, which includes their patient information, prescriptions, or appointments.
One person tells WTOC she learned of the attack, when she took one of her children to the medical center for a routine checkup and vaccination appointment, but it was canceled with no notice.
This viewer tried to make an appointment with a different doctor, but they needed medical records, which she couldn’t get because of the systems being down.
Another person told WTOC that she went in to get medication for her hyperthyroidism, which attacks the body’s hormones, but with the systems being down they couldn’t give her the medicine she needed, so she is trying to find out another way to get the medicine she needs.
According to one viewer, they are asking people to bring in any previously prescribed medications because right now, the hospital cannot see any that they have sent out.
Cyberattacks have become increasingly common in recent years. The healthcare industry has become a prime target for cybercriminals due to the sensitive and valuable patient data it holds.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), over 100 hospitals were affected by cyberattacks in 2024 alone, often crippling systems and delaying care. Beyond the financial costs, these attacks have serious implications for patient safety and trust.
The hospital posted about the incident on their website and said:
“Hampton Regional Medical Center has experienced a cyber incident. We are responding swiftly and thoroughly to investigate and address the situation. Our top priority is the safety and privacy of our patients, staff, and community. We appreciate your understanding.”
WTOC has reached out to the hospital for further comment on the attack and if it has been fixed, but the hospital says they will not be making any further comments other than what has already been posted on their website.
WTOC will continue to follow this story and update viewers if and when more information becomes available.
