Georgia Power strengthens coastal grid with major upgrades across Savannah region
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia Power is making major investments to strengthen the electric grid along the Georgia coast, with projects underway in areas including Savannah, Jesup, and Brunswick.
Company leaders say the upgrades are designed to make the system more resilient against extreme weather while meeting growing energy demands across the region.
After Hurricane Helene in 2024, the company’s most destructive storm, crews restored power to more than one million customers within five days, and now Georgia Power is strengthening infrastructure and adding redundancy to prevent future outages.
Projects include upgrading nearly three miles of transmission lines in Savannah, rebuilding a 20-mile line in Jesup, and completing a major new substation in West Chatham County to improve reliability and support growth.
Officials say additional upgrades are already making an impact. More than 267 new grid devices have been installed locally, improving service for over 34,000 customers.
Looking ahead, Georgia Power plans to strengthen service to barrier islands like Tybee Island and St. Simons Island, focusing on infrastructure that can better withstand severe weather.
Company leaders say these investments are key to keeping power reliable and supporting continued economic growth across coastal Georgia.
