Congressional runoff candidate holds forum in Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Sc. (WTOC) - Voters in South Carolina’s First Congressional District heard from runoff candidate Mac DeFord on Saturday.

Lowcountry Indivisible hosted the runoff candidate forum at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Lowcountry. The group said it is a non-partisan, progressive chapter of the Indivisible Project, a national organization to counter the extremes of the MAGA movement.

DeFord, a Democrat, spoke to people living and working in Bluffton. Organizers say Democratic candidate Nancy LaCore was invited but did not attend.

“Both Mr. DeFord and Ms LaCore have spoken at Indivisible meetings earlier in the year,” they wrote.

Emily Mayer, Director of Campaigns and Operations at Ford and Ford Group, a non-profit and political consulting company, gave a presentation after the forum called, “What Comes After the Primaries.”

“Even well intentioned, well informed folks don’t necessarily know what they don’t know until somebody explains it to them,” Mayer said. “So, my hope is that the folks that were here today who have already voted in a primary can now turn around and say to folks, in the runoff, ‘Hey, I learned this at today’s meeting. Now I’m going to relay that onto you.’”

Mayer encouraged voters to go to the polls on election day and wants those organizing the election sites to be prepared.
