Overnight traffic alert on I-516 near Ogeechee Road starting Tuesday, June 30

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Department of Transportation said drivers should plan for overnight traffic impacts on I-516 near Ogeechee Road as crews install new traffic technology equipment.
The impacts will be from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly starting on Tuesday, June 30 through Thursday, July 2.
“Georgia Department of Transportation construction partners will temporarily close I-516 eastbound at Exit 3 at US 80/SR 25/Ogeechee Rd. as part of the ITS and Connected Vehicle (CV) Implementation Phase 2 Project,” they wrote. “The closures are needed to keep traffic safely separated from construction while crews install a new concrete ITS pole.”
Detour details
During the nightly closure, drivers on I-516 eastbound will be detoured off the interstate using the off-ramp, crossing over Ogeechee Rd. and merging back onto I-516 eastbound via the adjacent on-ramp.
Why the work is happening
“The Interstate ITS and CV Implementation Project, Phases 1-3 will expand network infrastructure along the interstate system to improve traffic safety, operations, and reliability,” they wrote. “Once complete, the projects will provide a robust interstate communication network for Georgia DOT’s NaviGAtor™ expansion and ability to deploy CV technology."
Phase 2 work includes corridors along:
- I-16 from I-75 in Macon to Savannah
- I-516 from Montgomery Street to SR 25/Main Street
