[ORIGINAL STORY] Georgia’s Attorney General says the City of Savannah’s new gun ordinances are void.

In a letter to Savannah’s city attorney, Attorney General Chris Carr says the ordinances would “directly conflict with and are preempted by, state law.”

The letter goes on to state that under Georgia law, “No county or municipal corporation... shall regulate in any manner the possession, ownership, transport, or carrying.. of firearms or other weapons.”

Carr also says the city should rescind its approval of the new regulations.

The ordinance, passed by Savannah City Council last month, requires gun owners to lock up their weapons when storing them in a car.

In addition, it calls on people to report their gun has been stolen within 24 hours of knowing that it’s missing.

WTOC reached out to Mayor Van Johnson, he says the city will continue to enforce the ordinance.
