Free summer program in Savannah offers teens stipends to explore local history and storytelling
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - has opened registration for its 2026 “912 Freedom School,” a free summer program for Savannah-Chatham County teens ages 13 to 18.
This year’s theme, “Historians of Home,” invites students to explore the people, places, and stories that shape Savannah through games, discussions, creative projects, and community-based activities.
The program is inspired by the Freedom Schools created during the Summer of 1964 by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, also known as SNCC, to empower young people through education and civic engagement.
Organizers say participants do not need any special skills or previous experience to join. The program aims to provide a welcoming, creative, and judgment-free space where curiosity and self-expression are encouraged.
912 Freedom School will run Monday, June 8 through Friday, June 12 from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.
Snacks and materials will be provided, and stipends of up to $150 are available to support participation.
Space is limited, and registration is required. Interested students must complete an interest form and schedule a follow-up video call with Deep Center Youth Action Coordinator Socks Rizk to continue the application process.
