Fort McAllister candlelight tours offer glimpse into the past
RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - Fort McAllister is turning the clock back for one its most popular events of the year.
Reservations are open for spots on the 46th annual Candle Lantern Tour. The event on Saturday, Oct. 4 typically sells out. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the park “after dark.”
The state park offers five, 30-minute guided tours between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Groups of 25 will depart on their journey every 30 minutes. The tour includes dramatic scenes and an immersive lesson in Fort McAllister history.
“You’ll be dropped into the fort in February of 1863, just after the death of Major (John B.) Gallie,” Naturalist Chainey Garris said. “It’s a bit of a chaotic moment for the fort here. There’s the transition of power and there’s the traumatic death that’s just happened for the soldiers here. Guests will actually play the role of new recruits entering the fort during that time.”
The tour also features a chance to see a nighttime cannon firing. The tour is not intended to be frightening, but some scenes may be intense for younger children.
The tour admission is $25 per person and spots must be reserved. You can make a reservation by calling 912-727-2339. ADA accommodations are available for the earliest tour. You can request those spots when you purchase tickets.
