Former lieutenant governor tours affordable housing project in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan toured an affordable housing development in Savannah on Thursday as part of his campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

Duncan, who served as lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023, has switched from the Republican party to the Democratic party for his gubernatorial run.

Thursday in Savannah, he visited the Dundee Cottages. With about 40 units, it is a place where families and individuals experiencing homelessness will be able to live in the coming months for an affordable price.

Duncan said he is prepared to address key issues facing Georgia if elected governor.

“If you want somebody to show up day one as your next governor that’s going to solve problems, focuses on issues like this, use creative ideas, bring the affordability crisis to a close, bring the health care crisis to a close, and to push back on Donald Trump when he tries to send troops for worthless reasons into our streets, when he tries to weaponize the Department of Justice, that’s who Jeff Duncan is,” Duncan said.

Duncan believes he is the only Democratic candidate who can turn the governor’s seat blue in Georgia for the first time in nearly 30 years.

“This primary is about votes. And I’m telling you that Democrats all over this state are wired differently than Democrats around the country. Democrats are ready for somebody to focus in on the issues that matter most. And here’s the deal, a Democrat hasn’t won in nearly 30 years because they haven’t gotten enough votes. And the reason is because you’ve got to get more than the base to win a governorship in this state. I’m the only one in this Democratic primary that can get Democrats, independents, and disgusted Republicans to show up and vote for us in November.”
