First rescued sea turtle of 2026 set for ocean release on Jekyll Island
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is preparing for its first sea turtle release of the 2026 season.
The release is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 at 12 p.m. at Oceanview Beach Park.
The turtle, named Carnegie, was found on Cumberland Island in November 2025 in poor condition. Officials say the animal showed signs consistent with fibropapillomatosis, a disease that can cause tumors in sea turtles.
Carnegie arrived at the center with multiple tumors, skin irritation, and heavy epibiota, including barnacles and leeches.
After months of treatment and rehabilitation, the turtle is now ready to return to the ocean.
The event is open to the public, and organizers say it’s an opportunity to learn more about sea turtle conservation efforts along the Georgia coast.
The event is open to the public.
