Epilepsy foundation builds little libraries in Garden City
GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WTOC) - An epilepsy foundation in Garden City spent the day Friday building 30 little libraries for the community.
Marvelous Kids Epilepsy Research Inc., with help from a Home Depot grant and volunteers, constructed the small, outdoor book boxes.
Malachi Marvelous Roberts, who the foundation was created for and named after, came up with the idea. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was two.
Malachi’s grandmother, Cheryl Johnson, reached out to their local Home Depot after learning her grandson wanted to build the little libraries for kids in Garden City to enjoy.
Team Depot Captain Joel Weaver made sure they had the necessary materials for the project, and Johnson says Book Nation of Dreamers Inc. will supply some of the books for each box.
“Children literacy scores are not where they should be, so he wanted to take and make sure that the children would be able to read during the summer,” said Cheryl D. Johnson, Event Coordinator, Marvelous Kids Epilepsy Research Inc.
From memory issue to missing school days, epilepsy has had a huge impact on Malachi’s life.
Last year, the young boy wrote a book called “My Spaceship Don’t Work,” which follows Malachi as he travels through space, using his spaceship to share how living with epilepsy shapes his daily life.
