Effingham Co. Fire Rescue to host inaugural 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

by Mackenzie Baker

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Effingham County Fire Rescue is preparing to honor fallen first responders with a memorial stair climb this September. This will be the department’s first year hosting the event.

Effingham County’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is hosted in partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).

Every year across the nation, thousands of first responders honor the heroes who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001, by participating in 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs.

Many participants climb the 2,200 steps in full firefighting gear. The climb isn’t a race; it’s a solemn and powerful act of remembrance.

Effingham County’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is open to all members of the community who want to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice nearly 24 years ago.

The event will be on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Effingham County High School football stadium. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with an opening ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m.

Online registration is now open.
