Buses take final practice runs before first day of school in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The wheels on the school bus are going round and round in Savannah.
The community has seen school buses throughout neighborhoods in Chatham County starting on Wednesday, July 30. On Friday, the Savannah-Chatham County School System bus drivers welcomed parents to experience their child’s route.
The first day of school for SCCPSS is on Monday, Aug. 4.
Dozens of kids are going to pile into Candace Smith’s bus, along with the many other trained bus drivers in their school system.
“This is my area. I’m thankful that I got this route again. I get to keep that bond with the children,” she said on Friday before going on her last practice route. “I’m just ready, I’m ready for the start of a new school year, it’s going to be a great year.”
The practice runs are to ensure drivers are prepared, that equipment is placed correctly, and that the buses are clean.
Smith said she keeps hers clean and that parents shouldn’t have concerns on that front, but she noted that some parents still have concerns overall, especially when it comes to pick-up and drop-off timing.
She said they have a tablet at the front of the bus near their wheel and gears that shows them specific times and locations for their route, as well as a GPS to help them.
“Just going through it to make sure nothing needs to change. Make sure we can get through the streets easily,” she said. “Some parents have concerns if we’re out, if it’s still running on time, but it’s set up in the system to let them know if we’re going to run late and stuff like that.”
She’s most excited to interact with kids who have never ridden a bus before, helping them start the school year the right way.
“I love the communication with the parents, I want them to feel safe with me transporting their children, so I’m excited. I can’t wait for Monday, actually.”
