‘It’s a violating feeling’: Savannah residents report car break-ins

by Stephanie Adkisson

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One woman says she feels violated after catching two men on camera going through her car right outside her home.

This happened this week in Baldwin Park in Savannah.

“It’s a violating feeling, but it makes me feel more sad for them that they feel like they need to do that,” said Diana Mcgaw, resident.

Mcgaw says she always locks her car doors but somehow managed to forget Monday night.

When she went to take her kids to school Tuesday morning the car was a mess.

“When we went and looked in the car, I mean, it was trashed,” said Mcgaw. “There was just stuff everywhere that they had just rifled through really fast.”

WTOC talked to Sergeant Barry Lewis, a community engagement supervisor from the Savannah Police Department, we showed him the security footage that neighbors shared with us.

“You know, with entering autos lately, we noticed it’s a little more brazen than usual,” said Lewis. “These guys are walking through streets now with flashlights and just, looks like it’s two at a time, and that’s not always the case. But in recent incidents, we’ve had that issue where it seems to be a brazen thing. So that’s why we tell people suspicious activity. That’s a 911 call. If you see that happening, people walking out in the middle of the road or loitering or just hanging around, go ahead and call the police and let us do a ride through.”

Lewis said its important to not only keep your car doors locked but also to not keep your valuables inside.

Mcgaw said Tuesday morning was a good reminder of just that.

“You got to lock your doors and don’t keep anything of value, especially not guns in your car,” said Mcgaw.
