Two separate southeast Georgia fires burning more than 1,200 acres combined

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Two active wildfires are burning in southeast Georgia as parts of the state remain in moderate to severe drought, keeping wildfire conditions elevated in the region, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Buie Driggers Road Fire – Bulloch County

The Buie Driggers Road Fire in Bulloch County has burned 415 acres and is 75% contained. Officials said the fire escaped containment Wednesday, and Georgia Forestry Commission crews continue working to strengthen containment lines.

The Bulloch County Board of Commissioners said they will hold an emergency meeting Friday, July 31 to approve a temporary burn ban due to extremely dry conditions in the county.

Camden County Fire

A separate fire in Camden County has burned 800 acres and is 50% contained. Officials confirmed the fire started from a lightning strike in a marshy area, making access difficult for ground equipment. GFC helicopters are conducting water drops to assist firefighters on the ground.

No homes or other structures are currently threatened by either fire.

Travel advisory

Smoke from the Camden County fire temporarily closed portions of Interstate 95 overnight. All roads have since reopened. Officials advised motorists to use caution wherever smoke is present and to follow directions from local law enforcement.
