SCDOT expands free SHEP roadside assistance into Jasper County
JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - Drivers traveling through the Lowcountry will soon have access to free roadside assistance on a busy stretch of highway.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced it is expanding its State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP) into Jasper County beginning Monday, Aug. 3, 2026.
The new Jasper SHEP Region will cover Interstate 95 from mile marker 0 (at the Georgia state line) to mile marker 18.
State transportation officials say the expansion is aimed at enhancing safety and improving incident response times along one of South Carolina’s busiest travel and freight corridors.
SHEP responders provide free services to drivers experiencing vehicle emergencies, including:
- Changing flat tires
- Jump-starting dead batteries
- Delivering fuel
- Making minor mechanical repairs
Beyond helping stranded motorists, SHEP responders work to quickly manage traffic incidents, which helps clear congestion and keeps highway travel safer for everyone.
The program’s growth comes on the heels of its 30th-anniversary celebration earlier this year. Since its creation in April 1996, SHEP has assisted thousands of travelers across the Palmetto State.
How to get help
Drivers who find themselves stranded and in need of SHEP assistance can call *HP (*47) from their mobile phones.
SCDOT reminds motorists to slow down, move over, and pay close attention when approaching SHEP responders working on the side of the interstate.
