Savannah resident says he’s moving after second night of gunfire near his home

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah resident says he is leaving the state after gunfire rang out for the second consecutive night near Boyd and 58th Street early Thursday morning.

Savannah Police Department said no injuries were reported Thursday morning, but a house was struck by gunfire. Officers had also responded to a ShotSpotter alert in a nearby area early on the morning of July 15, but did not find anyone injured or shell casings at that location.

Resident describes two nights of gunfire

Zach Caswell, a relatively new Savannah resident, said he woke up to gunfire outside his home on both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. He said Wednesday’s incident involved what he estimated to be four or five shots.

Thursday morning’s incident, he said, sounded like a full automatic weapon — prompting him to decide to leave not only his home, but the state entirely.

“The person involved has been my next door neighbor,” Caswell said. “I haven’t got a lot of experience with them in particular, but outside of that, this is the second time it’s happened in as many days. Had another shooting last night. Last night it was only, I think, four or five shots though.”

Pictures from earlier Thursday showed bullet casings scattered along 58th Street.

A full report on Thursday morning’s gunfire reports was still pending as of this report. Additional details will be updated as they become available.
