Savannah kidney transplant recipient shares story of resilience

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah community member is highlighting kidney transplant awareness through strength, faith and a new tomorrow for those affected.

Gina Campbell was diagnosed in 2015 with Glomerulonephritis, a kind of kidney disease that caused inflammation of the tiny filters in the kidneys.

She said doctors told her that her body would fight off the disease, but it did not.

After testing, she was able to find a match for a kidney transplant.

She was then on dialysis for five years but never stopped working while taking treatments.

“It’s amazing to not be on oxygen, not in a wheelchair, not to be walking with a walker. I’m still able to function normal and I’m just here to celebrate me,” Campbell said.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, chronic kidney disease affects more than 1 in 7 U.S. adults, which is about 35 and a half million Americans.
