Savannah earns national Tree City USA honor as Arbor Day Foundation marks 50 years

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah has been recognized as a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, an honor awarded to communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to planting, growing and maintaining trees.
The designation was awarded in April, with city officials receiving notification in late May.
Mayor Van R. Johnson II said the recognition reflects Savannah’s ongoing efforts to create a healthier, more sustainable community.
“This acknowledgment aligns with our goal for Savannah to be a safe, environmentally healthy and economically thriving community for all,” Johnson said. “We know trees and green spaces are life, give life and contribute to the overall quality of living for our citizens.”
The award comes as the Arbor Day Foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Tree City USA program. The organization has helped plant more than 500 million trees in forests and communities around the world through its network of supporters and partners.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, communities must meet four standards to earn Tree City USA status:
- Maintain a tree board or department
- Have a community tree ordinance
- Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
- Hold an Arbor Day observance and proclamation
Foundation officials say urban trees provide numerous benefits, including reducing stormwater runoff, improving air quality, lowering temperatures, enhancing mental and physical health and increasing property values.
Savannah’s latest recognition highlights the city’s continued investment in preserving and expanding the tree canopy that has long been one of its defining features.
