Resident Speaks as Apartment Addresses Rat Issue

by Laney Mayfield

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Frazier Homes resident says she has been dealing with a rat infestation inside her apartment for months, raising concerns about living conditions in the complex. Now the complex is responding to WTOC.

Ebony Ellington, who has lived at Frazier Homes since 2022, says she has occasionally seen rodents in the past, but the problem has worsened significantly since March.

She says rats have been seen inside her home and around the property, including near a hole outside her unit.

“You can just hear them running from the kitchen to the living room,” Ellington said. “It’s like they’re arguing with each other—and a lot of them squealing.”

Ellington described one of the first major incidents she noticed earlier this year, saying rodents suddenly appeared inside her kitchen area.

“All of a sudden, it was like two rats that dashed beside the stove, and then they ran over to the washing machine area,” she said.

She also said a neighbor experienced similar issues before moving out of a nearby unit.

“Before my neighbor downstairs moved out, she was having it bad. She was looking for the rats trying to kill them,” Ellington said.

More recently, Ellington said the issue escalated when a rat entered her son’s bedroom.

She said her son left an ice cream box near his computer before bed and later discovered a rat chewing on it.

“He seen the rat chewing on the ice cream box. Then the rat was on top of the computer desk in his room,” she said.

During a recent meeting with Housing Authority of Savannah officials, the situation was acknowledged as a concern.

Ellington says she has reported the issue since March. However, the Housing Authority says its first official report of possible rodent activity was received on June 17, 2026.

According to the Housing Authority, property management and maintenance inspected the unit that same day and sealed identified entry points. On June 23, 2026, the agency says it brought in a contracted pest control provider for a more comprehensive inspection and treatment.

The Housing Authority said no additional rodent complaints were received following those actions.

Officials also said a follow-up inspection identified a large opening in the unit that was not present during the previous visit. An emergency work order was issued to repair the damage immediately.

The agency said its ability to fully assess the unit has been limited due to the presence of unauthorized animals, but it continues to work with the resident to complete inspections and additional repairs if needed. The Housing Authority of Savannah says it remains committed to maintaining safe and sanitary housing and will continue monitoring the situation.
