Local HVAC experts share tips to lower summer energy bills

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As summer temperatures rise, so do home energy bills. Local heating and air conditioning experts with Canady’s Heating & Air are shared key tips to keep cooling costs down and protect home systems from strain.
Their primary advice for homeowners is straightforward: regular maintenance is essential. Technicians warned that cooling bills can often spike simply due to a lack of routine maintenance. Catching system issues early can prevent minor inefficiencies from turning into costly, major repairs down the road.
“There’s only so much a homeowner can do themselves when taking care of their system,” Canady’s representative Devin Todd said. “The biggest thing is just getting annual maintenance done. Clogged drain lines are the number one issue we run into in the summertime just because of how much water those things can create.”
Canady’s recommended scheduling an annual inspection in the spring before extreme heat sets in.
In addition to professional inspections, homeowners can take several simple steps to reduce energy costs:
- Close blinds and draw curtains: Letting direct sunlight into the home can dramatically raise the indoor temperature, putting a heavy strain on the air conditioning unit.
- Keep filters clean: Regularly replacing or cleaning air filters ensures proper airflow and system efficiency.
Taking proactive, preventative measures can save homeowners money month-over-month while extending the lifespan of their systems.
