Mitsubishi Power to invest $490M, add 220 jobs in Chatham County

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. plans to invest $490 million to double its existing footprint in Georgia, while creating 220 jobs in Chatham County, according to Gov. Brian Kemp.
Mitsubishi Power’s Savannah Machinery Works is located at 1000 Pine Meadow Drive near Pooler. The expansion will add 450,000 square feet to manufacture parts for gas turbines.
The company will hire for manufacturing, operations, heavy machinery and technician roles. More information about those roles is available here.
“When we met with Mitsubishi Power and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Tokyo, we came away with a deeper understanding of how the company could continue growing in Georgia. We are excited that the Savannah Machinery Works is expanding to turn those possibilities into reality,” Kemp said. “Congratulations to all those who worked hard to support this job creator and the opportunities they will bring Georgians for over a decade, building on their long history as a valued member of this community.”
Mitsubishi Power is a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). Its power generation solutions include gas, steam and aero-derivative turbines; power trains and power islands; geothermal systems; environmental controls; and services.
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, MHI is one of the world’s leading heavy machinery manufacturers with engineering and manufacturing businesses in energy, infrastructure, transport, aerospace and defense.
“Mitsubishi Power Americas’ announcement that they will be expanding is a huge win for Chatham County. This was a very highly competitive project that is the largest investment to date on behalf of Mitsubishi Power Americas and will create meaningful new job opportunities for our community,” said Trip Tollison, President and CEO of the Savannah Economic Development Authority. “We want to thank SEDA Director of Existing Industry Zachary Ott from our team for his work, as well as our partners, including the Georgia Department of Economic Development. We look forward to a future groundbreaking ceremony to get the construction phase underway.”
POOLER, Ga. (WTOC.COM) — Mitsubishi announced a new expansion of its power plant in Pooler on Friday. The $490 million investment is expected to add more than 220 new jobs in Chatham County.
The plant is the first full gas turbine plant outside Japan. It opened in 2010, and the expansion is intended to help meet what the company says is growing demand.
Savannah Economic Development Authority President and CEO Trip Tollison said the company reviewed multiple sites before choosing the Pooler location.
“They went and interviewed and reviewed a lot of sites, and thankfully, we won the project. And, you know, it’s no secret, but Savannah, the region’s on fire. We’re, like, the fastest-growing part of the state right now,” Tollison said.
Expansion details
The investment will add a 450,000-square-foot expansion to help build parts for gas turbines to meet growing demand in the U.S.
Savannah Machinery Works Vice President of Operations Brandon Bodie said the facility’s work force and its location near port and rail access were the defining factors in the decision.
“Building on that investment, building on the know-how and the credibility that our teams have established here at this facility... to support at scale the amount of gas turbines and power generation equipment that’s needed for service and manufacturing of the electricity supply and demand that’s going on around the country and the world,” Bodie said.
The expansion also plans to add machining capacity and new technology to speed up production.
New jobs
The expansion comes with the promise of more than 220 new jobs.
“I just want to make sure that they understand that we’re committed to being an employer here in this region that supports the growth of the workforce, that supports the local economy, that gets ingrained in the community. I mean, this is like our family,” Bodie said.
Mitsubishi hopes to have the expansion up and running by early 2029.
