Military leaders across SC highlight family needs, growth, during annual briefing

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) — Military leaders from across South Carolina gathered in Columbia Wednesday to update Gov. Henry McMaster and other state officials on the challenges and opportunities facing the state’s military community.

The annual Commanders Brief to the Governor brought together leaders from South Carolina’s military installations to discuss troop readiness, quality-of-life issues for service members and their families, and future growth opportunities for missions across the state.

Col. Hugh Walker, commander of Shaw Air Force Base, opened the discussion by highlighting challenges facing military families as economic pressures continue to impact household budgets.

Walker noted that more military spouses are entering the workforce and emphasized the continued need for affordable housing and childcare options for service members and their families.

He also said military leaders are evaluating how evolving warfare and global conflicts could change the types of services and support airmen may need in the future.

“We’re digging into whether current support systems remain sufficient as the character of war changes,” Walker said.

Along the coast, commanders at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort reported significant growth on the horizon.

The installation is expected to add up to 1,000 Marines over the next four years and will soon be home to the largest F-35 hangar in the Marine Corps.

South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs Secretary Todd McCaffrey said investments like the new hangar demonstrate the military’s confidence in South Carolina’s ability to support service members and maintain mission readiness.

“You’ve got to be able to take care of families, you’ve got to be able to take care of service members, and you’ve got to be able to generate readiness,” McCaffrey said. “The fact the Marine Corps is investing in Air Station Beaufort is a function that they recognize is a good platform for readiness.”

The discussion also comes as South Carolina’s congressional delegation continues pushing for McEntire Joint National Guard Base to become a future home for F-35A fighter aircraft.

State officials said South Carolina has already demonstrated its ability to support fifth-generation aircraft through existing F-35 operations in Beaufort and remains well-positioned to compete for future missions.

“It’s a fifth-gen aircraft. It has amazing capability,” McCaffrey said. “Clearly, the fact that the aircraft is in South Carolina is reflective of the capabilities this state offers for training and deployment of that platform.”

Military leaders said continued collaboration between state officials and military installations will be critical as South Carolina works to support military families, attract future missions, and maintain its role in national defense.
