41 bands play front porches in Baldwin Park for second annual Savannah Porchfest

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - 41 bands played on front porches in the Baldwin Park neighborhood Saturday during the second annual Savannah Porchfest, turning the porches into stages.

Lawns, sidewalks and streets were filled with listeners. Music lovers from across the Coastal Empire stopped by, and the event included music, dancing and food.

Neighbors describe event

Neighbors said they have pride in their community.

“It’s been amazing, we love seeing the community come together, the music is great, we love it,” said Katie Vance, a Baldwin Park resident.

Bradley Wallace, a band host, said he likes when events like this happen in his neighborhood.

“I love my neighborhood and I love when things like this happen. I love it because it’s positive, it’s upbeat, it’s community,” Wallace said.

Event offers a way to explore the neighborhood

For some, Porchfest offered a way to explore their own backyard.

“It was a nice way to kind of be a part of the community outside of our direct block,” said Justus Skeesick, a Baldwin Park resident.

Lineup plays for seven hours

This year’s lineup played for seven hours, with a closing performance at Hop Atomica.

Some artists said the event was a change from what they are used to.

“I like that it’s during the day, and you can see things, and there’s no sort of dank backstage. And it’s nice, when you’re around people you may not normally see in the kinds of places you usually play,” said Phillip Price of Super Resistors.

Attendees cite community connection

Some attendees said Saturday was a way to connect with family, friends and neighbors.

“It’s just people having fun and enjoying themselves, rather than focusing on the craziness outside of just having good food and listening to good music,” said Skeesick, joined by Keiko Carter, also a Baldwin Park resident. “Yeah it really brings the community together.”

People the reporter spoke with said this year’s turnout was bigger than last year’s. They said they are looking forward to continuing the tradition in the future.
