SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Live Oak Public Libraries celebrated another record-breaking summer after participants logged nearly 4.5 million minutes of reading.

The library system announced Tuesday that 6,712 readers of all ages participated in its Summer Reading Program during June and July. Participation increased nearly 9% from last year.

Together, readers logged 4.474 million minutes, easily surpassing the library’s goal of 3 million minutes.

Participants were encouraged to read and log at least 600 minutes to earn a completion prize and enter a grand prize drawing. Library officials said many readers exceeded that goal.

The annual program also featured hundreds of free educational and engaging activities across Live Oak Public Libraries’ 13 circulating branches. Nearly 2,000 people attended six Summer Reading Kickoff Parties held June 6.

In addition to its reading programs, the library served 4,221 free meals to children ages 18 and younger at seven branches across Chatham and Liberty counties. The meals were provided in partnership with America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.

Live Oak Public Libraries will announce its second group of brand ambassadors next week ahead of National Library Card Sign-Up Month in September. The library also plans to offer special programs and community events encouraging residents to explore its available services and resources.
