MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WTOC) - Nancy Lacore will be on the ballot this November as South Carolina voters elect their next representative for the 1st Congressional District.

Lacore won Tuesday’s runoff election in the South Carolina Democratic primary, defeating fellow Democrat Mac Deford.

A political newcomer, Lacore spent 35 years in the Coast Guard, rising to the rank of three-star admiral. She later served as chief of the Navy Reserve, overseeing more than 60,000 sailors and civilian personnel.

Deford, a Coast Guard veteran, was running for the House seat for the second time. He previously served as general counsel for Hilton Head Island, where he helped secure 157 affordable housing units for the island’s workforce. Deford also was the only candidate to participate in a recent Democratic forum in Bluffton.

South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District has historically been represented by Republicans, but Lacore says she hopes to flip the seat in November.
