Dr. Annie Andrews has been declared the winner in South Carolina’s Senate race while Democratic candidate for governor Jermain Johnson conceded Tuesday evening.

Andrews is projected to win the U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina, the Associated Press has called.

During a speech on Election Night, Andrews stated, “I think we just made some history.”

Democrat Jermaine Johnson conceded to Republican Alan Wilson in the race for governor. The race was much closer than polls had previously let on.

It appears Democrats will gain control of both chambers of Congress.

On Tuesday, South Carolina broke its record for the number of votes in a gubernatorial election.
