Hilton Head Island to install security cameras at Coligny Beach

by WTOC Staff

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - The Town of Hilton Head Island will be upgrading public safety cameras around Coligny Beach following a security assessment.

The security assessment was made alongside the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, with upgrades meant to support public safety after concerns were raised about large groups gathering in Coligny, as well as reports of criminal activity.

The upgraded cameras will be at the Coligny Beach parking lot, Coligny Beach Park, and parts of the adjacent beach.

The camera system is intended to help law enforcement and first responders by enhancing situational awareness and support criminal investigations on one of the island’s most popular destinations, according to a press release from the town.

Officials said access to video will be restricted and used only for public safety, law enforcement and emergency response purposes. The camera system is not intended to monitor lawful activities, but deter criminal activity.

Installation is set to begin in early July and take approximately 90 days. The parking lot, beach park and beach will remain open with minimal impacts.

Public safety upgrades are part of the Town of Hilton Head’s Strategic Action Plan for fiscal years 2026-2028.
