Darline Graham, Ralph Norman advance to runoff in SC Senate Republican primary

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Sen. Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman moving on to a runoff election in the Republican primary for United States Senate, according to The Associated Press.

Graham was appointed to the seat by Gov. Henry McMaster after the death of her brother, Lindsey, in July.

“This is a very emotional night because I’m usually standing here celebrating with Lindsey,” she told supporters late Tuesday. “So I know he’s looking down right now smiling and that gives me peace because it’s difficult.”

Norman, meanwhile, has served in the House of Representatives for South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District since 2017. Prior to that, he served two terms in state office.

“I see an electricity in this race,” Norman told supporters. “I see people wanting to get involved and I think it couldn’t come at a better time. We are at a tipping point in America and I want to make sure it tips the right way.”

Both candidates now advance to an Aug. 25 runoff after no one in the field gained at least 50% of the vote.

The winner of the runoff will go on to face Democratic candidate Dr. Annie Andrews in November’s general election.
