Georgia Southern holds Summer Celebration, expects record fall enrollment

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia Southern University held its annual Summer Celebration Tuesday on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah.
The tradition dates to 1948, when the campus gathered to mark the harvest before the fall semester. The event now brings together students, faculty, and staff for watermelon, fruit, and Leopold’s Ice Cream.
Leopold’s creates custom flavor for the occasion
This year, Leopold’s — founded by a Georgia Southern graduate — created a custom flavor for the celebration.
“You’ve got to have the Leopold’s True Blue,” said Kyle Marrero, president of Georgia Southern University. “He made it specifically for us — it’s a little lemon custard, has some slices of almond and some blueberries. So you get a little bit of salty, sweet — and then even it’s healthy. It’s got blueberries in it.”
Celebration continues; record enrollment expected
The Summer Celebration continues Wednesday on the Statesboro Campus at 10 a.m.
The fall semester begins in seven weeks. Georgia Southern is expecting record enrollment of more than 32,000 students.
